Based on the FOCMEC method, the study calculates the focal mechanism solutions of 129 earthquakes with 2.0≤ML<3.5 in the Yangbi area from 2008 to 2025 were calculated. Combined with the focal mechanism results of 412 earthquakes with magnitudes of ML≥3.5 collected, the damped stress tensor inversion method is adopted to invert the regional stress field before and after the 2017 Yangbi MS5.1 and 2021 Yangbi MS6.4 earthquakes, and the dynamic evolution characteristics were analyzed. The results show that: The earthquakes in the study area are mainly strike-slip type, followed by normal fault type. The regional tectonic stress field is generally characterized by north-south(NS) compression and east-west(EW) tension, with obvious strike-slip properties. Before the 2017 MS5.1 earthquake in Yangbi (from January 1, 2008 to February 26, 2017), the stress distribution was relatively dispersed;from the 2017 MS5.1 earthquake to the 2021 MS6.4 earthquake (from February 28, 2017 to May 20, 2021), obvious stress concentration was observed, and the stress shape factor R value was all below 0.5, indicating intense tectonic compression and favorble seismogenic conditions for strong earthquakes. After the 2021 MS6.4 earthquake in Yangbi (from May 22, 2021 to July 31, 2025), the stress concentration decreased, and the stress shape factor R value was below 0.5 but higher than before the main shock, suggesting weakened tectonic compression and partial stress released. The direction of the principal compressive stress before and after the 2017 MS5.1 and 2021 MS6.4 earthquakes in Yangbi was generally NNW-SSE, but the main shocks occurred in the transition zone where the local stress direction turned to nearly NS or NNE. Comprehensive analysis indicates that the stress field deflection and enhanced local stress concentration can be used as an important indicator for identifying potential dangerous areas for future moderate to strong earthquakes in this region.
